Think It Through: Go and Make Disciples of All Nations

This past Sunday morning, Craig shared a big chunk of his heart and vision for his family’s plan to follow Jesus. As we reflect on God working with ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things, it is both scary and encouraging to examine our own life and responsiveness to our King.

It is also very good to remember that Hong Kong is a Summitview thing, and not just a Swing thing. In light of those ideas, please consider chewing on some of the following questions.

1) What do you think will be the immediate effect of Summitview’s efforts in Hong Kong on:

a. You personally?

b. Your family?

c. Your community group?

2) If you were to ask God what part he would have you play, what could you dream he may have you do?

3) Craig shared many of the significant moments of decision and direction change in his life. What are 3 or 4 of the most significant moments in your life where God led you clearly?

4) What were the life circumstances that God used to bring you to the point of realizing your need for a savior?

5) What would be something God might ask you to do that would really make you uncomfortable?

6) Is there anything big you are asking God for? Do you have a specific desire to be used you in a gospel or Kingdom initiative?

Which God?

Reading in Joshua this morning and was encouraged to read about Joshua challenging the Israelites to choose their god. We must challenge ourselves with the same question daily. Which god will I serve today? Will it be the god of power or the god of money or some other worldly god or will it be the one true God of the Bible?

Joshua 24:15 And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

Great SALT Retreat!

This past weekend there were 105 folks or so from Loveland and Fort Collins up at the YMCA Snow Mountain Ranch near Winter Park. It was a great time of learning, encouragement and growth. We learned about the Gospel of Jesus Christ which is all about the kingdom of God.

Mark 1:14-15 (NIV)
14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God.
15 "The time has come," he said. "The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!"

Good teachings for young and old alike. There was at least 1 salvation and 3 baptisms. God's kingdom was definitely advanced.

Thanks to everyone that was able to be a part of that time. It was certainly a well made investment of time and money. Let's be trusting God for the "fruit" that will continue to be born.

Please Pray

Later today there will be over 100 middle school, high school students and parents from Loveland and Fort Collins traveling up to Winter Park for a 3 day conference/retreat. If you could be in prayer for this time, we know it will make a difference in many, many lives this weekend. Here is a quick excerpt from John Meyer in reference to what can be prayed for:

"Many of our kids have been to great conferences before. Many of them have been in a church environment all their lives. It is easy to have become numbed to the power of God's truth. Yet it is in these years that our teens will either make this faith their own or simply let it go, biding their time until they can walk away from it. Jesus said, "My sheep hear My voice..." I often pray for God to let people hear His voice. We can ask Him for that this weekend."

Outreach Diagram Quiz #6

This will b a tough week for many in the outreach class because of the SALT retreat this weekend. And so, I thought to myself, why not just post the actual quiz? I couldn't come up with any reason not to, so here it is: The Week #6 Quiz

Rejoicing in Hope

Romans 5:1-2 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God

In my world, some days seem more worthy of rejoicing than others. And yet if our hope is in the glory of God, rejoicing will be a part of our daily walk with God. The problem for me is that my hope can be in other things and then that is when my spirit of rejoicing dissipates.

God, help me to keep my hope centered in Christ.

The God of Hope

Romans 15:13 - May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

May God's rich hope be evident and obvious to you today.

Complacency

Zephaniah 1:12 - At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps and punish those who are complacent, who are like wine left on its dregs, who think, 'The LORD will do nothing, either good or bad.'

Just believing that God exists does not impress Him. The Lord is looking for those that not only believe that He exists but that He is able and does act. God has an agenda and is actively pursuing it. God also has an agenda for our lives and He is interested in those who have decided that He is all powerful and all knowing and will decisively act accordingly.

Consider this prayer today: God I acknowledge that you alone are God, that you are powerful and that you do act in real, tangible ways in this universe, in this world and in my life. God, everything is under your control. God, help me to act accordingly and to do your will today.

Faith and Belief

So encouraged this morning by Hebrews 11:6. Faith in God means believing that He does exist and that He will reward those who seek Him. Seek Him in faith today by believing that He is real and that He will be faithful to act in your life.

Outreach Class Quiz Tips - Wk #4

The tips for this week are as follows:
  1. Focus on verse memorization for Isaiah 53:6 and 1 Peter 1:16.
  2. Be able to give the verse reference based on the verse text for all other verses learned so far.
  3. Memorize transistion between Man and The result of Sin sections.

Where Are You?

In Genesis 3:9, God calls out to Adam and Eve, 'Where are you?'  They were hiding from God.  They were hiding because they had disobeyed God and they knew it and they were ashamed and guilty and so they hid.  Their sin had relationally separated them from God, which then led to physical separation, i.e. they hid from Him.

Thankfully, God came to us in the person of Jesus Christ to reconcile us relationally, spiritually and physically to Himself.  Hallelujah!  Do you believe?  Have you taken the free gift of salvation?  If so, then you now have an eternal relationship with God through Christ.  If not, consider it - there is nothing better than to be connected with the One who made you.

Relationally Speaking

eAccording to Mark 12:28-33, our Think It Through reading today, there are two categories of relationships that we should focus on as growing disciples of Jesus. One is our vertical relationship with God. We are instructed to love the one and only God with everything that we have - our heart, soud, mind and strength. The second is our horizontal relationship with other people, our neighbors.

What I must do today is figure out how that gets played out in my life today as I obey the "Great Commandment." It occurred tome this morning that it is not called the "Great Suggestion" so I better go get started!

God's Love

God not only loves us but He demonstrated His love towards us by sending His Son to our rescue.  God expects our love in return - not just with words but with action, to obey Him.

John 14:23-24 - Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.

True To His Name

In our Think It Through reading for today, I was struck by the phrase "true to my name." This was God's description of this particular church. My application thought when I read that phrase was: What a glory to God it would be if that would be a description of Summitview, that we have been and will continue to be true to the name of God. That's my prayer for our church today. Will you join me in that prayer?

Outreach Diagram Tip #2

Try to do something each day instead of waiting until the end of the week to do everything in one or two sessions. This will build review into your training schedule and will help you to retain things longer. In other words, cramming is not optimal!

A Savior

So glad that this prophecy in our Think It Through reading (Zechariah 9:9-17) was fulfilled over 2000 years ago in the person of Jesus Christ.  We have been given a wonderful Savior and I am grateful.

Teaching Moments

In light of the recent Haiti catastrophe, there will undoubtedly be questions and opportunities to talk with our kids and others about our response to what has happened.  Ultimately, we can either respond in fear or in faith - and of course God wants us to respond in faith.

I thought I would pass along the following thoughts from "National Center for Biblical Parenting" when it comes to how we respond to tragedy and what our response should be.  I have also added in a couple of comments in italics.

Dealing With Fear After Tragedy
Day to day life provides opportunities to teach children about God. It's the job of parents to frame the picture of world events, to help children understand life from God's point of view. Teachable moments become available in times of crisis. That doesn't mean that you preach or lecture. It means that you ask questions and carefully share information that can guide your children to right thinking.

So what do you say? How do you respond to their questions? How can you draw your children into productive discussions? What kinds of things can you do that will help your kids during this time?

Here are some things to consider when helping children deal with fear and questions about world events:

Be careful about lying to your children (I would say this stronger - never lie to your children - lying is a sin and is never acceptable - period) by saying, "It's all okay." Your children can see that things aren't okay. In fact, this kind of statement can be counterproductive and cause children to feel like they can't trust you, further increasing feelings of insecurity.

Explain that the world isn't out of control and help put these events into perspective. Pray with your kids about those directly involved in the tragedy.  (This is huge because this is a way that we as parents can mode trust and faith to them.)

God is with us always. We can trust him. His angels protect us. God loves us and cares for us and he is in charge (Psalm 46).

Answer your child's questions. Explain the details briefly in clear terms and then focus on the good that we see in God and in the people who are helping.

The solution for fear is to learn to trust. Trust is the ability to release control to another. Children can learn to trust when they take small steps of risk and have positive experiences over a period of time. Gently encourage children to take small risks of separation and then provide the comfort they need. During that process children need a lot of parental love, patience, encouragement, and support. Remember, it's God's presence that helps us through difficult times.

Everyone Who Calls

Joel 2:32
And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as the LORD has said, among the survivors whom the LORD calls.

So thankful for this promise from God's Word that we found in the Think It Through reading for today from Joel 2:28-32.  God is so faithful and good - so much so that He doesn't want anyone to perish (2 Peter 3:9).  He proved that is true by sending His one and only Son to us (John 3:16).

Those Who Have No Hope

A simple thought from our Think It Through reading for today:1 Thessalonians 4:13-18.  The phase "who have no hope" caught my attention this morning.  There are many in this world that have to hope.  That is just a fact.  What God put on my heart this morning as I read that was will I care enough about those that have no hope - will I love them enough - will I have a great enough passion for them to share with them the hope of Jesus Christ?

As I have been thinking about what I would like to see God do in and through my life this year, I have decided that I would consistently and fervently pray for the following in 2010 related to this:

  • To love others more
  • A greater compassion for those without Christ (those who have no hope)
  • Opportunities to be a witness for Christ - opportunities that I cannot get out of
  • Opportunities to invite people to church
  • Courage to speak truth in love
  • Make my heart more like Jesus - a shepherd's heart
  • Passion for obedience
  • Passion for the Word
  • Passion for good
  • Passion for prayer
  • Opportunities to give Bibles away
  • God would stir me up and encourage me and give me a greater passion to share His truth with others

Thanks to Faithwalkers for stirring some of these in my soul and heart.  These are just a few of my prayers that I am trusting God for in 2010.  What are you trusting God for this year?  We pray about what we are trusting God for; we don't pray about those things that we are trusting in ourselves for.

Our Witness for Christ and Moral Hypocrisy

As I read an article this morning about a research study (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/12/091229105906.htm) dealing with the relationship between power and moral hypocrisy, I was reminded that what we do and how we behave deeply matters, and if we claim to be a Christian, then it matters just not for our own life but more importantly it matters because our behavior reflects on Jesus Christ and all of His people.

As I read the article, I was reminded of Jesus, words to the religious leaders of His day who had a lot of power and who claimed to be moral and just:

Matthew 23:25-28 (NIV)
25 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.
26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.
27 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean.
28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.

I was also reminded of what Mark Darling said at Faithwalkers.  He said something like: 'He never wants to be famous because he couldn't handle it.  Human beings were not made for fame.  Jesus was and is the only person who can handle fame.' (not an exact quote)

Our efforts should seek to make Jesus Christ more famous.  God wants us to be clean on the inside and for our behavior to be a reflection of Christ.  I'm praying that God will prevent fame and power in my life and that through my life Christ will become more famous.

Daniel 9

A few random thoughts as I was reading through Daniel 9 from the Think It Through for this week:

1)  Daniel was reminded by God as he read the words that God had given to Jeremiah.  Daniel was reading his "Bible" and God spoke to Him and Daniel acted.  Think about that for a moment.  Daniel was reading the book of Jeremiah - the same words that we can read today in our Bible.  Very cool!  Not only was Daniel faithful to read God's Word, he then did something with it.

2) Daniel recognized the sinful ways of his people and cried out to God and God answered.  We can do the same.

3) 70 Weeks.  Different people have different views as to what the "70 weeks" mean.  Below is a graphic that illustrates 4 of these views:  (click on the image for a larger view)

2010

For the Christian, the goal of this new year 2010 is the same as every other year.  Our ultimate goal simply doesn't change - to be conformed more to the likeness of Jesus Christ.  And so it is good to step back and ask a few questions:
  • How am I doing at becoming more like Christ?
  • Am I allowing God to transform and change my life?
  • What areas of my life do I need to fully surrender to Jesus Christ?
  • How am I contributing to the body of Christ?
  • What prayers do I need to pray?
  • What do I need to give?
  • Do I truly want to see the lost get found by Christ?
  • Do I truly love my brothers and sisters in Christ?
  • Is my relationship with God the most important relationship in my life?
  • Does my life actually reflect Christ?
The list of questions go on and on, but they are questions that we must ask if we are indeed going to be any different one year from now.  Take some time to ponder these and other questions and be open to the changes that God has for your life.  God has some things that He want to accomplish in us and through us in this coming year.

May God richly bless your life in this new year.
