Wikipedia defines "Digital Citizen" as: "a person that participates in society using a certain amount of information technology (IT). To qualify for the unofficial title of digital citizen a person must have the skill and knowledge to interact with private and government organizations through means of "digital" tools such as computers or mobile phones, along with access to these devices."
I tried to just gloss over 2 Timothy 2:16 this morning but something wouldn't let me. I wonder what Jesus would think of our digital age and our digital citzenship? What would He think of our social media engagement and our technologies? What would His council be to us as we use technology that is designed for communication - print, TV, computers, phones, etc.?
I'm not entirely sure, but it's something that I struggle with and think about as someone who is a follower of Christ and who likes technology and is a "digital citizen." What I have come to conclude is that the potential for bad and harm does not exist in the technology itself as it is totally inert. Rather the potential for harm lies with me, who can choose how will I use it. Like everything else, we can use it for His glory or not. Like everything else, it can further the kingdom of God or not.
One thing that God has said when it comes to how I communicate using any and all means - written, spoken, digital, or otherwise is:
2 Timothy 2:16 (NIV) Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly.
The question for myself is: How am I doing with what I know God has told me when it comes to communication?
