Proverbs 24

I started reading Proverbs 24 and BAM! right out of the gate verse 1 hit me.

Proverbs 24:1 (NIV)
Do not envy wicked men, do not desire their company;

Just prior to reading this I was reading Psalm 73 which was written by a man named Asaph. He was basically asking God, "Why do good things happen to bad people?" At times, I can ask the same question and in that sense, I can "envy wicked men."

God gives us His answer in verses 19 and 20:

Proverbs 24:19-20 (NIV)
Do not fret because of evil men or be envious of the wicked, for the evil man has no future hope, and the lamp of the wicked will be snuffed out.

God is perfectly just but I have to trust Him to sort it all out according to His will and in His perfect timing.

What bits of wisdom did God reveal to you today from Proverbs 24?

  1. These verses jumped out at me when reading Proverbs 24 this morning:

    Proverbs 24: 30-31
    I went past the field of the sluggard, past the vineyard of the man who lacks judgment; thorns had come up everywhere, the ground was covered with weeds, and the stone wall was in ruins.

    At a recent fellowship team, we had been studying the parable of the sower. We discussed how the thorns in the parable applied to our lives. If we let the thorns grow in our life (bad habits, attitudes, etc); they will eventually choke out the Word of God.

    Matthew 13:22
    The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful.

    I think this verse in Proverbs applies to the parable of the sower, because it is when we are lazy and "sluggish" that we tend to forget or not even care about the thorns growing in our lives.
