When Jesus was challenged by the religious leaders of His day to pick the greatest commandment, He just went with what His Father had already said. To love God with everything you've got. Jesus was simply quoting God's Word that Moses had written down in the book of Deuteronomy, which was just a reiteration of what God had already spoken to the nation of Israel.
It's no coincidence that the first commandment is to put God first - to be fully devoted to God. And then when Jesus was asked what is the most important commandment, He simply quotes Deuteronomy which points to the first commandment!
I just love it when a story comes together!
